The Cost of Life for the Disabled

October 9, 2012

One of the reasons why Medicare and Medicaid are going broke is the high cost for medical equipment like custom made electric wheelchairs. Custom power wheelchairs can cost thirty-thousand dollars depending on a physically disabled person’s needs.  Every five years the electric wheelchairs need to be replaced.  Other specialized equipment like communicative devices can cost twenty thousand dollars.  There are two million disabled people in the United States.  Medical equipment manufacturers can overcharge Medicaid and  Medicare for their products because of the limited demand for their products.  Prices of the specialized products need to be streamlined.  This would reduce the burden on the entitlement programs and save the entitlements for the future.  A politician didn’t write this.  A cerebral palsy author did.  Maybe I should be President.
